Caregiver Tip: “The deteriorating state of your loved one may sadden you. Do all you can for them, and you’ll come to terms with it”
A father has a huge role to play in a man’s life. Simply put, he teaches the child how to ‘be a man’ in the truest sense of the phrase. Since childhood, my dad has been a role model who guided me every step of the way. And I’ve always found myself to be a family man.
So, as my father was diagnosed with Geriatric Alzheimer’s Dementia, I left my career in 2015 and devoted all my time to his care. I always say that my dad is flourishing creatively with Alzheimer’s dementia. Yes, it sounds like an oxymoron. But it is a fact that he’s creating fantastic masterpieces.
Although, it’s a hard reality that soon, I will not see any more of these great artworks. It makes me sad, but I have come to terms with it because in the end, what matters is that my father does what he loves doing and so has a good quality of life.
At home, we’ve created an environment that helps him thrive while we strive to always preserve his dignity. We’re doing the best we can. The bottom line is that I love my dad. He’s my hero. And there’s nothing else that I’d rather be doing and nowhere else I’d rather be than by his side to see him through to the end.
I am Carlos. I am a male caregiver, and proud to be one.
