In Conversation with Mark McDaniel to Bring His Insights on Caring for a Senior at Home

Caring for a senior at home offers several benefits for the caregiver and the older adult. Seniors thrive in familiar surroundings. Home care allows them to maintain a sense of control and dignity within their cherished environment, reducing anxiety and depression.

Besides, familiar routines and treasured possessions provide comfort and security. Further, home care fosters stronger family bonds as daily interaction strengthens relationships and creates lasting memories.

For caregivers, witnessing a loved one’s well-being firsthand is incredibly rewarding. The act of caring deepens connections and offers a sense of purpose.

Ultimately, prioritizing home care when possible allows seniors to age gracefully and keeps families connected.

To shed some light on the same, we interviewed a home care industry expert to bring his perspective on home care for older adults.

Who Did We Interview?

Mark is a senior home care consultant and works with hospital systems, skilled nursing facilities, and physicians to coordinate the best possible care for seniors. He has been working in the industry for over a decade and is adept at understanding the specific needs of care recipients and accordingly devising a care plan for them.

Let us now delve into what he has to say about providing home care to older adults:

Question 1. What inspired you to become a senior home care consultant?

After working as a licensed physical therapist for seven years, I was interested in finding a way to expand my reach in helping people obtain optimal health outcomes. Taking a step away from the clinical side allowed me to do this.

Question 2. How can someone assess a loved one’s current and potential future needs to ensure the right level of care?

Ask questions and get advice from the right people. The medical industry is ever-changing and constantly evolving. I do this all days a week, 365 days a year, and it can still get fuzzy for me sometimes.

Question 3. How to supervise and oversee in-home caregivers? How can an agency handle it if a caregiver does not show up?

Having an established expectation of communication is the key. An educated senior or family member will undoubtedly make better decisions and have confidence that the best decisions are made.

I would encourage weekly “touch base” calls at a minimum. Also, having a point person (for example, consultant, concierge, sales rep) can help with unforeseen circumstances.

Question 4. What measures must be taken to ensure a senior’s safety and security in their home?

The caregiver should be properly trained so they know what to look for and assess. Also, the caregiver must know how to properly advocate for a senior if and when an issue arises.

Further, the caregiver must know how to handle the situation if the older adult faces any abuse.

Question 5. What advice would you give to someone looking to become a senior home care consultant?

Never stop learning; stay organized; be accountable.

In Conclusion

A passion for helping people lies at the core of home care consulting, where the focus is on a broader picture of well-being. Also, the importance of ongoing assessment by qualified professionals to ensure the right level of care cannot be overstated.

Further, effective communication is the key to supervising caregivers and handling unexpected situations. Senior safety requires well-trained caregivers who advocate for their clients and identify potential issues.

Finally, for aspiring consultants, it is best to prioritize continuous learning, organization, and accountability.
