    Understanding Alabama's Electronic Visit Verification

    The Government of Alabama has mandated that all Medicaid-funded home care agencies implement Electronic Visit Verification (EVV).

    EVV PHASE I:

    The Alabama Medicaid Agency implemented an Electronic Visit Verification and Monitoring (EVVM) for HCBS waiver service clients. The state initially entered into a contract with AuthentiCare for the system. Providers did not have an option to use another EVV system. Phase I was implemented on October 1, 2017.

    EVV PHASE II:

    Alabama Medicaid partnered with HHAeXchange to provide a free Electronic Visit Verification (EVV) system for providers of home care services. Agencies could also use a 3rd party EVV solution and import data into HHAeXchange using Electronic Data Interchange (EDI). Phase II was implemented on February 01, 2022.

    Time and a half pay, also known as overtime pay, refers to one and a half times an employee's normal hourly wage. According to the Fair Labor Standards Act, Alabama's overtime minimum wage is $10.88 per hour.

    Alabama or federal law does not place any limitation on the number of hours a caregiver is permitted to work in a particular day or week. However, the employer must compensate the worker based only on the number of hours worked.

    Alabama labor laws do not need employers to provide employees with severance pay. If the employer selects to provide severance benefits, these requirements must comply with the terms of an employment contract and established policy.
